The SME Performance Indicator is an aggregation of gross value added (GVA) for the small business sector (1-19 employees).

Analysis of this sector, including breakdowns of key industries, provides insight into our economic future.

For the month of September, the SME Performance score increased by 1% over three months. This is encouraging as the SME sector continues is upwards trajectory since the start of 2025.

Employment levels among SMEs have remained steady throughout 2025. Productivity growth (measured by GVA per employee) has increased. This indicates that while SMEs are employing fewer people, rising employee productivity is driving performance.
